PoE

Power over Ethernet (PoE) is a technology that delivers electrical power and data over standard Ethernet cables, simplifying deployment of network devices such as IP phones, cameras, and access points.

PoE enables network devices to receive both power and data through a single Ethernet cable, eliminating the need for separate power supplies and streamlining installation in locations where electrical outlets are limited. It is standardized by IEEE (802.3af, 802.3at, 802.3bt) and supports a range of power levels for different device types.

Common applications include powering VoIP phones, wireless access points, IP cameras, and IoT devices. PoE switches and injectors negotiate power requirements automatically, ensuring safe and efficient operation.

Best practices include assessing power budgets, verifying device compatibility, and planning for redundancy in mission-critical environments. PoE enhances flexibility, reduces costs, and supports scalable network deployments.
